Friday February 19, 2010 - I’ve never seen a state where people say the talent is down, but 43 players signed out of State. The talent is not down. Just ask the schools that signed the 43 players from Louisiana. Out of the 43 players I predict 34 players have a chance to play as a true freshman on Offense, Defense or Special Teams. That’s under 10 players redshirting. That tells me these kids are not second level DIV 1 players but impact players that can make a DIV 1 programs two deep after fall practice.
This is part one of two. In part two I will talk about the players that will make an immediate impact as a true freshman and why.

Thursday February 18, 2010 - Colleges and high schools throughout Louisiana are preparing for another year of intense, gladiatorial action in the fall. Many teams are looking to next season as the vehicle for restoring their programs to greatness, or as the mechanism for reaching unprecedented success. One such program is Eleanor McMain, an uptown New Orleans 3A school whose gridiron accomplishments have been sub-par as of late. However, under the tutelage and leadership of coaches Kevin Roussell and Larry Williams, the Mustangs hit the .500 mark this year, a seemingly mundane accomplishment that nonetheless has serious implications.

The phrase Football is a game of inches to me means (always won and lost in the trenches), and that’s controlling the line of scrimmage.

LSU has some of the best Skill talent in the country, I will go out and say LSU has better WR’s, and just as good of RB’s, and DB’s, than even Florida , and Alabama as a group. WR Brandon LaFell ,WR Reuban Randle, FS Chad Jones, WR Terrance Tolliver, TE/HB Richard Dickson, SS Brandon Taylor, RB Charles Scott, RB Keiland Williams, RB Stevan Ridley, ATH/RB Trindon Holliday, TE/HB DeAngelo Peterson, CB Patrick Peterson, WR/ATH Russell Shephard, and RB Michael Ford , who I can’t understand redshirted. You can be ranked #1 in recruiting every year, but you better be signing dominant defensive and offensive lineman in this league called the SEC. I feel like there’s been a drop off in recruiting for these positions compared to the LSU standard, when they won National and SEC Championships.

Ranking Wide Receivers and Sleepers - Class of 2010

January 4, 2010 - There are three types of Wide Receivers you usually see in any level of College Football, One, is usually tall, fast, Deep Post route Receivers, who can run under 4.6 forty, and break the long gains after the catch, then there’s the Tall or Short possession receivers, who are not fast usually in the 4.6 to 4.7 range, but have good hands, and run really good routes. Then there’s the slot receiver, who usually is too small to be a running back, but not big enough to be a true post wide out, usually these guys are like 5-7 to 5-10, they are usually either super quick or super fast, Example Super quick, Wes Welker, Texas Tech, and Currently New England Patriots, or a Fast Version being a DeSean Jackson, 5-9 165, California, and currently Philadelphia Eagles. Jackson can run in the 4.3 range, and Welker is only in the low 4.5 forty range, but wow is he quick and has great hands, runs great routes.

November 12, 2009 - The temperature is rising at Southeastern Louisiana University, and we don’t mean its cold and flu season. The Fighting Lions are set for the biggest game since football returned to the Hammond campus in 2003. Saturday, November 14, the Lions host Stephen F. Austin with a possible Southland Conference championship and a trip to the NCAA (FCS) playoffs on the line. A victory could also mark the return of Southeastern to the Top 25 polls since the football program was dropped in 1985.

Mattew Sguyres the K, has a cannon leg, and has been consistent for over three years kicking for the team. I put Neville in the same class for having weapons on offense at the skill positions like teams as West Monroe, Central, Lutcher, Breaux Bridge, and Edna Karr and John Curtis High School.

November 3, 2009 - Central High School in the 1970’s was a powerhouse with Head Coach Sonny Jackson at the Helm. Quarterback Steve Ensminger in the late 70’s had Central in the title hunt for a couple of years. It took until the year 2007 to turn the program around to be title contenders again. October 28, 2009 - Greg LaFleur is in his fifth year as the Director of Athletics of Southern University and A&M College in Baton Rouge. LaFleur brings a wealth of knowledge and 17 years of college athletic administration experience to the Southern University Athletic Department. LaFleur, a former standout football player and athletic administrator at LSU, graduated from LSU in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in physical education, and played six years with three different teams in the National Football League. After being drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles, he also played for the St. Louis Cardinals and ended his playing career with the Indianapolis Colts.

Southeastern Louisiana University celebrates its Homecoming this Saturday (Oct. 17) on campus with all the usual activities capped off by a game against Southland Conference rival Sam Houston State at 6 p.m.

Ian Willis, Assistant Recruiting Coordinator and ULL student, is that guy. From playing on a small town 1A team to currently working with a college football team that is currently 1 and 0 in the Sun Belt conference, Ian looks back on his high school football career and reminisces on the past and how his journey and experience playing football led him to where he is today.

Muse emerging as game leader at Central Private

October 14, 2009 - Bobby Muse Jr. is a senior Running Back and Defensive Back at Central Private High School. Under Coach Mike Longmire, Muse has been a key player in the few years rushing for 1775 yards and 26 touchdowns in his junior season. Muse has also started his senior year successfully with 1107 yards and 16 touchdowns in only 6 games.

While Ellis leads his team to success in 2009, he will continue his football career as a Wildcat for Northwestern University, just outside of Chicago. Whether he's a Tiger or Wildcat, Ellis is all about implementing teamwork and leadership.

Breaux Bridge’s Pete looking for success in 2009

October 6, 2009 - Latrelyn Pete is Breaux Bridge High School’s senior Tailback. Coached by Mike Mowad, Pete currently stands with 46 carries for 252 yards and 3 touchdowns for the Tigers. During his junior season Pete was awarded 2nd Team All-district 5-4A and the Coca-Cola Player of the week.

After starting his football career in the 6th grade, Pete feels he has “gained a good feel for the game over the years.”

New Year, New Expectations

October 2, 2009 - The 2009 Zachary Broncos are welcoming in new Head Football Coach, Neil Weiner this Season. Coach Weiner started his coaching career in 1997 as a Freshman Football Coach at Catholic High School. He then went on to Redemptorist High School where he began teaching and coaching in 2000 for the Wolves. With this being Coach Weiner’s first year at Zachary, the Broncos will be starting new traditions and will have new expectations for their players.

September 30, 2009 - St. Frederick tight end/defensive end Aaron Thibodeaux enjoys eating Italian and barbecue, and he likes to vacation in Florida where he can go deep sea fishing with his grandpa, but he really appreciates the moments he gets to spend on the Friday night stage on his home field in front of all his family and friends. “Having the home crowd behind you, and having family and friends watching you just makes a world of a difference when you’re playing,” Thibodeaux said.

Bubby Brister’s QB Camps Providing Balance

September 29, 2009 - Former NFL quarterback and Louisiana native Bubby Brister was drafted in the third round of the 1986 draft by the Pittsburgh Steelers where he played for seven years. While Brister spent most of his time as the starting quarterback for the Steelers, a knee injury sidelined him, and he moved on to play backup quarterback for the Philadelphia Eagles and New York Jets. However, Brister eventually joined the Denver Broncos where he was a part of two Super Bowl championship teams. He quickly became a fan favorite in 1998 when he came into play for legendary quarterback, John Elway, who had to sit out a number of games due to injury. Brister and the Broncos went undefeated in his 4 starts and threw for 10 touchdowns and only three interceptions. After throwing for nearly 15,000 career yards, Brister retired from the NFL in 2000.

Badon Looking to Succeed with Young Team

September 28, 2009 - Tommy Badon, a Louisiana native, has been the Westminster Christian Academy Head Football Coach for six years. Originally from Lafayette, Coach Badon attended high school at Teurlings Catholic where he played Lineman and Kicker. After Graduating in 1977, he attended UL-Lafayette where he was the Kicker for the Ragin’ Cajun’s. Badon then went on to coach football at Teurlings Catholic, Lafayette High, Blinn Junior College and ULL where he was the Track and Field Coach. Now Badon is currently the Athletic Director and Head Football Coach for the Westminster Crusaders in Opelousas. With overall speed and conditioning as their strength, Badon and his young team are looking to win a District Championship and make a Play-off run.

Matching Up Masson and McGuire

September 23, 2009 - Running back snapping the ball or wide receivers trading their speed and good hands for a quarterbacks tight spiral, it's not uncommon to catch players wearing different hats during, before, or after practice.

Take starting quarterback Chris Masson and back-up quarterback Brad McGuire. Wide receiver would be the home for these two Gulf Coast natives if not for their talent with the long ball.

But, a shared interest in the same position is not the only thing these two Cajuns have in common, not even by a long shot.
