5A Offensive Player of the Year, Derrius Guice

Derrius Guice, Catholic High School

Catholic High School's RB Derrius Guice won our 5A Offensive Player of the Year Award. Guice is the definition of SEC Running Back. He is powerful, fast, tough, and knows how to run in between the tackles. Derrius rushed for 1,331 yards and 20 Touchdowns(Note: Derrius only played 1 half in many of these games). He also had 38 catches for 521 yards, 9 TDs and 1 punt return for a TD. I am really excited to see this kid play for the Tigers next year.

5A Defensive Player of the Year, Dustin Mitchell

Dustin Mitchell, West Monroe High School

West Monroe High School's Dustin Mitchell is our 5A Defensive Player of the Year. Dustin Played LB and Safety for the Rebels. He also played a little QB. When you talk about tough kids and great leaders, Dustin definitely falls into that category. He is also an outstanding baseball player. Check out his highlights below!

5A Offensive Player of the Year, Christian Campbell

Christian Cambell, Ponchatoula Football

Ponchatoula High School's QB Christian Campbell was our 5A Offensive Player of the Year. Christian was one of the top athletes in the entire state. The dual threat QB was asked to run more often than not in Coach Hank Tierney run first offense. He rushed for 1,530 yards and 25 touchdowns while also passing for 1,001 yards and 13 TDs. He will be doing more of the same at Georgia Tech next year where he will compete for the QB spot.

4A Offensive Players of the Year, Tyron Johnson and Deshawn Capers-Smith

Hunter Bedgood, Christian Campbell, Deshawn Capers-Smith, Shea Patterson, Tyron Johsnon

Warren Easton QB Deshawn Capers-Smith and WR Tyron Johnson were two of the most electrifying players in the entire state in 2014. Deshawn passed for 4,333 yards and 50 touchdowns while only throwing 2 INTs. He also rushed for 1318 yards and 21 TDs. Tyron caught caught 94 passes for 1,589 yards and 17 touchdowns. He was also a spectacular kick and punt returner with several return touchdowns.

Al Jones, St. Augustine Purple Knights, St. Augustine High School, St. Augustine Football

St. Augustine High School has a long tradition of outstanding football coaches going all the way back to Legendary Coach Otis Washington. In February, the school hired one of their own in Coach Al Jones who graduated from St. Augustine in 1975. Coach Jones has been in the coaching and/or education for over 30 years. I got to sit down with Coach Jones and ask him a couple questions last week.

4A Defensive Player of the Year, P/LB Jordan White

Jordan White, Benton High School

Benton High Schools P/LB Jordan White is our 4A Defensive Player of the Year. The tigers had one of the best defenses in all of 4A in 2014. One of the biggest factors was Jordan. Jordan punted the ball 64 times: 40.3 avg, 13 punts over 50 yards, 5 punts over 60, 12 punts inside 20, 9 punts inside the 10. He also added an impressive 67 tackles, 20 TFL, 2 INTs, 4 pass break ups, 1 FR, 1 INT returned for a TD.
