May 25, 2010 – I left my house in Baton Rouge around 5:00 AM to go to Alexandria High School, to catch up with the future DI and IAA players and coaches from the school, which I met at 7:15 AM. I really had a great time taking pictures and hanging out with the coaches from Alexandria High School, Head Coach Chris Gatlin, and Coach Eric Cook.I was able to find out from head coach Gatlin that former LSU and Northwestern State star QB Craig Nall is currently living in Dallas, TX, and semi retired (meaning there’s still a chance he could get called up for a NFL team in 2010.) Craig had a great career at ASH High School, and finished at Northwestern State. Nall played several years with the Green Bay Packers, and Buffalo Bills.
Alexandria High School had 4 players last year sign with DI or IAA schools. The most recent stars just finished in the last couple of years with Oklahoma Sooners, RB Chris Brown and DB Nic Harris. Nic graduated from Oklahoma in 2008 and was a rookie in 2009 with Buffalo Bills. In 2009 Nic had a team high 14 tackles in one game at the end of the season for the Bills. Nic, I remember watching in person against Menard, the local rival school. Nic had 2 interceptions and stood 6-3, 210 pounds as a CB. At Oklahoma he got up to 223 pounds his current weight for the NFL. Chris Brown just finished a career at Oklahoma in 2009 as a key RB the past 4 years, and is currently with the Denver Broncos. Neither player was offered by LSU in state. LSU was loaded with RB’s at the time, but I thought Nic would have been a great CB in the SEC at 6-3, 210 pounds, and runs a 4.5 in the forty.
The future of ASH high school is really good. There are some talented QBs coming up and skill players, and really good lineman. QB Cameron Firnberg (6-2, 200) is the new Starter, and has a really good arm. Craig Nall is actually working with this kid in the off-season to help him with his footwork, arm and mechanics. Firnberg is a really good kid and has a lot of raw talent that’s untapped. LB Michael Petty (6-0, 205) is a big time leader on defense. Petty had 10 sacks in 2009. The team will be young overall, which is scary for the local teams that have to play them the next two years.
I will have more in our preview issue in Late July, which you can order from the site. I would like to thank Head Coach Chris Gatlin for helping me the day before school let out for the year, and coach Eric Cook for getting the kids to take pictures. I enjoyed talking to the players and coaches at Alexandria High School.
