Louisiana Game of the Week: Southern Methodist at Tulane

by Eric Brown

November 3, 2010 – Tulane running back Orleans Darkwa rushed for 193 yards on 29 carries, but it was a big play in the fourth quarter for SMU that sunk the Green Save Saturday.  After a scoreless first stanza Tulane opened the scoring going 7 plays, 52 yards, scoring on a 9 yard pass from Ryan Griffin (11-24 121 1 TD 1 INT) to Cody Sparks.  Matt Szymanski scored SMU’s first points on a 25 yard field goal making it 7-3 and that was the half time score.  Tulane kicker Cairo Santo added his own 25 yard field goal in the third to put the Wave ahead 10-3. Tulane defense held a potent SMU offense for a while, but the Mustangs scored on four of their last five possessions and posted 249 yards which was more than half of their total. The Wave took a comfortable 17-3 lead with 2:24 to play in the third quarter when Austen Jacks picked up a fumble and raced to the end zone from 23 yards out.  The Mustangs would march 5 plays, 77 yards as the third quarter expired.  Zach Line (23 rushes – 177) caps it off from 5 yards out cutting the deficit to 17-10.

The Mustangs started the final stanza holding the Wave to a three-and-out and on the ensuing possession.  SMU used 5 plays to go 74 yards and Line would score his second TD from seven yards out to even the score at 17 with 11:17 to play.  The next drive for SMU would take a pair of plays, the second being an 82 yard Touchdown hook-up from Kyle Padron (18-32-354 1TD) to Aldrick Robinson.  The deep scoring strike would give SMU a 24-17 lead. Tulane would try to tie things up as the Wave marched all the way to the five of SMU ,but Ryan Griffin’s pass in the endzone on fourth down was picked by Chris Benjo for a touchback. SMU would put the game out of reach by going 80 yards on five plays as Padron scored the final points from 3 yards out with Quarterback keeper making it 31-17 which was the final.

“It’s really disappointment more than being frustrated at this point,” Coach Bob Toledo said. “We’re disappointed because we had a chance, we played a good football team and they beat us”. Tulane hoping for Bowl eligibility drop to 3-5, 1-3 in C-USA and SMU improve to 5-4, 4-1. Tulane will host Southern Mississippi (5-3 2-2) Saturday, and SMU will visit Texas El paso (5-4 2-4).
