New! Helen Cox High School, Jahmal Tilman and Dion Ray

Helen Cox High School, Jahmal Tilman and Dion Ray

I got to visit and spend some time with the Helen Cox Cougars on signing day last week. Head Coach Willie Brooks has always been able to develop talent. As a result, the Cougars always seem to have at least 1 recruit (if not many more) moving on to the next level. This year it was QB Dion Ray (6-0, 200) and DL Jahmal Tilman. Dion enrolled early at ULL this past January and has already started to get some attention.  Rajun Cajun Head Coach Mark Hudspeth has admitted that Dion could make an impact on the team  in 2015 and that we may see him in the Wildcat. Dion has all the tools to succeed and is a perfect fit in the ULL system (basically ran the same offense for the Cougars).

Another excellent fit, DL Jahmal Tilman (6-2, 250) signed with the Southern Jaguars. Coach Dawson Odums has done an excellent job with this program by finding talent such as Jahmal who can come in and make an instant impact. Jahmal was getting interest from UL-Monroe (offered), Idaho, and Western Kentucky. He has great feet, size, strength, and is a leader on and off the field. I got to sit down with the Harvey, LA native and ask him a few questions:

You had several good schools interested in you. Why Southern?

It is a big family over there. I felt at home. Also, they told me what I needed here instead of what I wanted to here. I really liked there honesty.

Which Southern Coaches recruited you?

Coach Elvis Joseph recruits the New Orleans area, and he was the main person who recruited me. I have also stayed in touch with Coach Odums through the whole process.

What position will you play?

They want me to play all over. I will probably rotate from Inside to Outside DL. I will play some OLB as well.

Are you happy to stay close to home and the family?

I am very excited to stay close. My dad actually played at Southern (1987). It is really fun to represent the same college as my father, and he is really proud.

Have you gotten to talk to Dion since he went to ULL?

I talk to him all the time. DRay and I are great friends. We went on visits together throughout the year and have been playing together for a long time now.

Anyone you want to thank for help during this process?

I would like to thank God, Coach Brooks, my friends, family, girlfriend Daisia, my dad (Jahmal Tilman) and mom (Joann Tilman).
