They Don’t All Sign on Signing Day

by Lee Brecheen

Marcus Hall – St. Charles Catholic (Missouri Southern State)

April 20, 2012 – Every year kids from all over the United States sign Football Scholarships in early February.  The pressure to sign with a college hits an all time high for parents and recruits by December when it’s time to decide where to play college football for the next four to five years of their life away from home.

What most people don’t hear about or understand is that you don’t have to commit or sign to a college on signing day.  A lot of kids for various reasons will wait until the end of February, March, April, May, or June and sometimes as late as July to decide where to go.  One of the common reasons I’ve seen over my 20 years of doing this is the kids don’t have enough time to take visits during December and January because they go right into other sports like Baseball, Basketball, and Track.  They can’t fit college visits in with games during the week and weekend.  Another reason is that they are at a Junior College and they still need to finish their core work or GPA work to wait to sign and become eligible.  If they are going to a D2 or D3 college, they have a lot of choices but can’t decide where to go.  Another reason is they’re being recruited evenly by colleges for more than one sport; not just football but also basketball or baseball.  Finally kid’s that are current seniors don’t have the ACT score yet, but have the core grades and GPA and end up passing the ACT test in the spring or summer a few weeks  after signing day.  What I found out is that a lot of great players will get picked up by smaller schools late because a lot of the DI colleges are out of Scholarships after Feb 3.

Some of the big sleeper signees to remember that signed to small colleges are DB Roderick Sweeney from Parkway High School (East Texas Baptist), DB Spencer Robinson from Bogalusa (Bellhaven), DT James Pea Milton from Amite (Langston), WR Treyvias Alexander from Breaux Bridge (Fort Hayes State), OT/OG Harland Brown from McDonogh #35 and Douglass High School (Bacone College), DT Trey Tolliver from Glen Oaks (Arkansas Monticello), TE/DE Tracy Greene from McDonogh #35 (Langston), QB Jyron Walters from McDonogh #35 (Northern Colorado), ATH Patrick Bethley from West Jefferson (Delta  State), DE/FB Steven Brignac from West St. John (Lincoln), CB/ATH Jarius Moll from West St. John (Jackson State), QB Justice Jones from Patterson (Texas Southern), ATH Treston Decoud from Lakeshore (Chadron State), ATH Marcus Hall from St. Charles Catholic (Missouri Southern State), and RB Johnta Hebert from Glen Oaks (Prairie View A&M).

I compiled a list of where many kids decided to go since Signing Day on February 3rd, and it will surprise you how many kids have decided since signing day.  A lot of the research was done by me personally getting in touch with these kids to ask where they might sign since signing day, and you will see that some players still haven’t decided, but told me the latest of where their leaning.

I started building this list right after February 3rd.  I hope you enjoy the list, and I think it’s important to include where kids sign – not just from National Signing Day but all as a group.
