Interview with Cole Spear
by Reid Althage
LAFM: Name, position, school?
My name is Cole Spear, and I played Safety for Denham Springs High School. I am now signed to play with Nicholls State University.
LAFM: Current height and weight?
6-2, 190 lbs
LAFM: Any impressive accolades or stats?
I was First Team All-District and First Team All-Parish. I am not sure of my tackles, but I had 4 INT’s.
LAFM: You signed with Nicholls State. What other schools were you looking at if any?
Yea, I was looking at Brown University, Columbia University, Air Force, and Henderson State.
LAFM: When did you first get in touch with the Colonels?
I first got in touch with Nicholls about halfway through the season. I think it was week 4 or 5. The Defensive Coordinator Steve Adams contacted me after the Broadmoor game.
LAFM: Why did you choose Nicholls State?
It is close to home. Everyone I met during my visit were very comforting. I liked what they are doing with their football program and everything just fit.
LAFM: What are some things that stand out from your visit?
Well, I met a lot of the team. They were very nice and seemed like a great group of guys. They signed a lot of athletes this year, and when I went on my visit I was impressed with the players they already had on the team. The coaching staff knew what they were talking about and had some great plans. The school was nice. They had just renovated some of the facilities. They had new apartments and a new Rec Center.
LAFM: Who are some people that stand out as major factors helping you along the way of your recruiting process?
My parents definitely. They were always there for me. They never forced me into anything, but they kind of guided me along the way. Coach Steven Adams at Nichols did a great job of giving me all the information I needed about Nicholls. He let me know what they had to offer and their plans with the football program. I would say those were three of the main people.
LAFM: What do you bring as a player to the Nicholls State football program?
I feel like I bring a very balanced attack. I am a smart kid, I can run, and I can tackle. Up the field I can cover as well. I have a very good football IQ being a safety. I like getting after it and playing football.
LAFM: What is one thing you think that you need to improve upon or adjust to going to the next level?
LAFM: How has Denham Springs High School prepared for football at the next level?
Denham Springs has a very mature way of handling things. As far as football goes, our practices are set up the same way as a college practice. Everything about Denham Springs football is taking mature way of learning. I mean they stress winning and success, but at the same time they stress what exactly you need to do, technique, and having an intelligence for the game.
