Interview with Garrald McDowell

By Reid Althage

LAFM: Name, position, school?

My name is Garrald McDowell, and I played DE for Covington High School. I am now signed to play  with the Ole Miss Rebels.

LAFM: Current height and weight?

6-2, 255

LAFM: Any Notable statistics or honors?

Some of my stats this past season were 109 tackles, 9 sacks, and 4 forced fumbles. My honors include 2x All-State, 2x All-Metro,  3x All-District, and a District MVP. I also received the 4 Year Varsity Award, and was a Under Armour All-American.

LAFM: Favorite football player of all time? Why?

Bo Jackson. He was a great player who was committed to the game.

LAFM: You are committed to Ole Miss. What other schools were next in line if you had to say 1-3?

I would say LSU and Arkansas were the closest.

LAFM: When did you first come into contact with Ole Miss?

It was at the Ole Miss camp. I talked to the D-Line coaches and they showed me around the campus. I eventually met all the players like Robert Nkemdiche, and Laquon Treadwell. They showed me that it is all family at Ole Miss.

LAFM: Why did you choose the Ole Miss Rebel?

I talked about it with my parents. They told me to go with your heart. Like I said earlier, I really enjoyed the camp. Ole Miss felt right in my heart.

LAFM: What did you enjoy the most about your recruitment process?

It was visiting different places, and meeting new coaches. It was  fun interacting with the different coaches and finding out what they felt about me as a player.

LAFM: Who are some people that stand out as major factors in choosing Ole Miss?

My family, my coaches here at Covington, and my teammates. They never put any pressure on me and were behind me the whole way. They said just go with your heart and my heart was with Ole Miss.

LAFM: What do you bring as a player to the Ole Miss football program?

I bring a great work ethic and a toughness. I like hard work and do not take plays off.

LAFM: What is one thing you think that you need to improve upon going to the next level?

I need to improve a lot of things in order to play in college. I need to improve my hands, my quickness overall, and all of the little things.

LAFM: What are you most excited about going into next year?

Playing football. I just love the game. I am not that far away now and will be going up their June 1st. I am extremely excited.

LAFM: What advice can you give the 2015 class on their recruitment process?

Keep working hard, believe in your dreams, and you will achieve them.

LAFM: How did Covington High School prepare you for college and playing football at the next level?

Well with Covington, it starts with academics. They made sure I stayed on top of my grades. They also taught me what is right and wrong. Lastly, they made sure I stayed focused on what I wanted to do and my goals as a student and an athlete.
