2023 Louisiana Football Prep Preview: Port Barre HS

Port Barre Red Devils

By Lee Brecheen

Head Coach: Brent Angelle(1st year)

2022 Record: 1-8

Class & District: Class 3A (District 4)

Although Port Barre HS will have a new head coach in Brent Angelle, its new head coach is no stranger to the school.

“I’ve been the offensive coordinator the past five years now so I know the program, the district and the players,” Angelle said. We had a great spring from the kids in 2023 and we have a veteran group of kids back. We had great Summer attendance from the players excited about moving forward to the fall season.

When I think of great players from this program I think of ATH Chris Keys (Alabama), DB Daniel Francis (LSU) and DB Marvin White (TCU, Cincinnati Bengals). The Red Devils will have a pretty tough non-district schedule as they are scheduled to play Livonia, Beau Chene & Opelousas Catholic. The last time Port Barre won a state title was in 2002 and they were also runners-up in 2001.

Port Barre DB Cade Metrejean

The offense will return one of the best backs in the district senior Markell Mallett (5-7, 160) with three years of starting experience. There’s also a great Athlete back in RB/DB Keenan Hardy, who is also Port Barre’s return specialist. Although he may be 5-2 and 125 pounds, he has that wow factor and he can play the game at a high level. The offense will have a starter back from a year ago with QB Tylus Metrejean who started five games in 2022. The offensive line might be the strength of the team and it is led by three-year starting senior center Greyson Davis (5-11, 240), senior OG/DE Taylon Polotzola (5-10, 230) who is a second-year starter, OT/DT Colton Simmons (6-5, 250) and young players mixed in.

The defense will return leader Bralon Pickney to lead the team in tackles in 2022. Also back on defense will be

(4.6 speed), senior SS/RB Maddox Fontenot (5-7, 155) who was an All-District LB in 2022 and RB Markell Mallett will play some DB for the team too.
