2023 Louisiana Prep Football Preview: Bastrop High School

Bastrop Rams

By Lee Brecheen

Head Coach: Alex Washington (1st year)

2022 Record: 1-9

Class & District: Class 3A (District 1)

The Bastrop High School football program has won four state titles, including three straight from 2005 to 2007. However, the program has fallen under hard times as the Rams are 2-18 over the last two seasons. The best group on the team right now is the running back position they lead by example for the team as leaders.

However, new head coach Alex Washington will hope to change that. Coach Washington is a graduate of Carroll High School (Class of 2006) in Monroe where he played on the offensive line and made All-State before playing the same position at Ole Miss. I think it was a great hire. This team has a few players in the 6-1 to 6-2, 250 to 300 range with raw talent and the coach is just the guy to teach these kids the trenches and mold their futures.

The offense and program will build around three-year starting QB Jemarion Hawkins (6-0, 180). Hawkins has a great arm. I have seen it in person and I believe this is the year to put it all together. Top skill players return on offense are RB Ty Minniweather (5-10, 165, 4.55 speed, Sr.), WR Delawrence Wilson (5-11, 185, Sr.) team’s best wide receiver with 4.5 speed leader, second-year WR Christian Winzer (6-1, 170, Sr.) who has good hands, RB/LB Makyrin Weatherspoon (5-10, 185), WR/CB Johntavious Lollie (5-9, 160, Sr.) and WR/QB Austin Davenport (5-10, 170) who is a fast player with 4.45 speed and can give you some reps at both quarterback and wide receiver. The offensive line has the experience and size to become a great unit in 2023. The offensive line rotation was wide open when I interviewed Coach Washington in late July. There are several players over 275 to 300 pounds competing for the 5 spots and might see as many as seven players or eight playing offensive line in 2023.

The defense has the talent to become a really good unit in 2023. The players coming back with experience are DE/OLB JaQuenton Brown (6-1, 210, 4.7 speed) hard worker for the team, OLB Joseph Fells (6-3, 215) sleeper in recruiting tough kid, DT Aquareon Armstrong (6-2, 255) finally healthy this year has a lot of talent three-year starter, CB Ryan Davenport (5-10, 160, Sr.), FS Elliot Mason (6-2, 185), DE/TE TK Atkins (6-2, 220) has the talent to become a good player, DT/NG Demarion Wilson (5-8, 255) who is a tough kid, CB Dylan Dorsey (5-11, 170), DT/DE Demontarious Johnson (6-2, 265) has the talent to become special and LB Marcus McClinton (5-11, 195) a three-year starting LB tough kid for the program.
