“I feel like we are little ahead of where we were in 2022 and we have a few bright spots,” said Block HS head coach Sa’Mel Washington. “We just have to keep chopping wood. Trying to get everybody to buy in.We are short on lineman going into the fall camp and hopefully we can get some lineman in the fall.We expect 25 to 30 kids in the fall, right now we have only 14 to 15 players out for Spring/Summer.Junior High kids will have to play and one day I hope we can get to where we don’t have to play 7th & 8th graders on varsity in the future. We did have a few 8th graders play in 2022 which will help us a lot.”

Washington played football at Copiah-Lincoln Junior before moving on to play at Alcorn State where he started 1 year in 2009 as a 6-2, 215-pound free safety. When he was at Copiah-Lincoln, his team won its conference. Coach Washington played football for Natchez HS in Mississippi where he was a part of the 2006 senior class that saw him and five of his teammates from Natchez HS earned scholarships for football.

The whole team season will go as far as young talented Athlete/QB/WR/RB/DB Kristian O’Steen takes this team. This kid can run a

legit 4.4 forty and Coach Washington thinks he’s special beyond his years in football. The team also has a special athlete in senior ATH Korin Collins (5-10, 160) with legit 4.3 speed who can play anywhere when needed for the team, with WR/DB being his main spots. More players who will have to step their game up and play both sides of the football are OL/DL Jorran Curry (6-4, 315) who missed all Spring & Summer, senior MLB/HB/OL William Watson (5-10, 190), a big-time leader, QB/FS/WR Dakota Adams, second-year starter TE/DE Caleb Henderson, LB/RB Dominique Atkins, who has lettered on the football team since he was an 8th grader in 2022, and finally 2022 All-District MLB/OL Charleston Allen (5-7, 165).
