2022 Playoffs: Defeated Covington 39-6 in 1st Round, Defeated Benton 29-28 in 2nd Round, Lost to Ruston 49-31 in Quarterfinals of Division I (Non-Select) Playoffs

Denham Springs Safety Dashawn McBryde

Last season, Denham Springs HS made the quarterfinals for the first time since 1985. Head Coach Brett Beard played football in at Vanderbilt before finishing his career at Southeastern Louisiana under then-head coach Hal Mumme. Beard went to high school at Vestavia Hills HS (Class of 1999), which is right outside of Birmingham, Alabama

“We will have a very young but talented offensive line this season and we will also only return one defensive lineman from 2022,” Beard said. “We graduated 30 seniors from a year ago.

The Yellow Jackets lost two three-year starters at running but they return power

runner RJ Johnson (5-10, 220) with quickness. They also have senior RB/WR Hudson Byers (5-8, 175), who is a three-year letterman with 4.5 speed, and senior WR/CB Maison Vorise (5-11, 180) who might be the best football player on the team with 4.5 speed and doubles as a lockdown cornerback. The offense also has more playmakers in WR Cadyn Lewis (5-8, 160) and WR Tylan Hayes, who has 4.6 speed.

The quarterback position has a player back with a lot of experience in Jerry Horne. This is Horne's year to blossom as he's got the arm and frame to be a big-time player soon.

The offensive line will be young Coach Beard said but led by OG Jackson Martin (5-11, 280). OT Sy Martin (6-4, 305). Senior TE/H-Back Seth Bishop (6-2, 220) will also help with run blocking and is a good pass catcher as well.

Denham Springs WR/CB Maison Vorise

The defense has some talent back again as it is led by one of the state’s best playmakers at defensive back in All-State senior SS/FS Dashawn McBryde (6-4, 210) who is committed to LSU. McBryde had 46 tackles, nine pass breakups, four forced fumbles and an amazing nine interceptions in 2022, two of which were returned for touchdowns. The Yellow Jackets also have back on defense second-year starter senior DE Elijah Martin (6-4, 225), DT Kaden Davis (6-4, 285), DE Darrius Scott who is quick off the snap, senior MLB Kyle Doiron (5-10, 170), second-year starter senior OLB Jonas Clark (5-11, 195), CB Maison Vorise, who Coach Beard thinks is the best CB he’s ever coached, SS Rancher Miller who is a great young player and a few young players trying to get on the field win jobs in the fall.

Denham Springs TE/H-Back Seth Bishop

The special teams unit will have a kicking competition going into the fall. The person who is leading for the starting job is Jonathan Brazo and the team has two talented seniors also competing with no experience in games as well.

“The Denham Springs job was always the job I wanted and now that I’m the coach here I feel really good where we are going. I always thought this school was the sleeping giant in the baton-rouge area for Class 5A.”
