Ferriday Trojans
By Lee Brecheen
Head Coach: Cleothis Cummings (2nd year)
2022 Record: 2-8
Class & District: Class 2A (District 2)
Head Coach Cleothis Cummings is a graduate of Ferriday High School (Class of 1990). The coach went to at both Copiah-Lincoln Community in Mississippi before finishing at Alcorn State. This is the second stint for Coach Cummings as he was the head coach at Ferriday High School from 2012-2014 his first go around.
The Trojans have greatly improved this fall as they have already equaled their win total from last season. After having two close losses against solid programs Richwood and Peabody, the Trojans won two straight wins against Bastrop and Madison to go into Week 5 with a record of 2-2.
The program will have a young QB in Dorian Taylor who can run a 4.6 forty and has a strong arm. The rest of the skill players back are DB/OLB Howard Curry, a leader and four-year starter with 4.55 speed and a lot of experience, CB/WR Kevon Thompson (5-7, 160 Sr.), WR/DB Desmen Jefferson (5-9, 168) who is a big-time athlete, WR/OLB Robert Taylor (6-4, 165), WR Paityn Collins (6-2, 180), RB/WR Jerry Griffin (5-8, 192) who is the spark plug of the offense, RB Rylan Martin (5-8, 185, Sr.), RB Taevion Edwards (5-8, 180), and DB Dariyon Brown (5-9, 160).
The key for Ferrdiay’s season will be the line’s health. In the trenches, the Trojans have TE/DE Marvin Davis, OL/DL Jordan Smith (6-1, 200), DE/OLB Caleb Ellis (6-1, 195), OL/DL/LB Shaunterris Conier (6-0, 236, Sr.) who lost a lot of weight for this year to gain more speed, OLB Chris Reed Jr. and four-year starter OL/DT Maurice Smith (5-10 270) who is a leader and a hard worker who happens to start on both sides of the ball.
