“We lost a lot from our defense in 2022. We also will have a new quarterback, a new starting running back and a few new linebackers on defense, said Haughton head coach Jason Brotherton.
Not only will the Buccaneers lose a good amount of players from the year before, but they will lose three of its key members from last season: OG/OC Peyton Polk (signed with UL Lafayette), QB Colin Rains (signed with Northwestern State for both football & baseball), and LB Connor Blank (signed with Southern Arkansas U).
However, Coach Brotherton is very optimistic.
“I am excited about our team and the players we have coming back are dynamic and can make plays,” Brotherton said. “We return our top three wide receivers from a year ago. Excited as I’ve ever been with our skill talent back. We don’t have much depth and need to stay injury free in 2023.”
The offense will have a new quarterback in Christian Turner, but he has a lot of
Haughton DE Lawson Moock
experience in games in 2022 and he knows the offense. Not only does Turner have a good arm but you don’t want him to scramble as he has 4.6 speed. The passing game returns a strong group of experienced players led by senior WR Jalen Lewis (5-10, 175) who has 4.65 speed but he looks faster in uniform. He’s a big-time playmaker as he had 32 catches with 643 yards and four touchdowns in 2022. You also have talented senior WR Jamarion Montgomery (5-9, 160, 4.6 speed), talented senior WR Rashard Douglas (5-9, 175, squats 375) and RB Marlon Montgomery (5-9, 165) helps with the passing game out of the backfield as well. The run game will have a rotation of Montgomery, Davontay Moss and other young backs competing to get experience. Second-year starting TE Cayson Moreno (6-0, 198) will be involved in both the passing game as well as run blocking.
The offensive line lost some experience but returned some really good players in senior C Tucker Melton (5-10, 280, Benches 275 pounds), second-year starting senior Rimarria Davis (5-9, 240), and new starter Ryland Crawford (6-2, 280).
The defense will have a chance again to be very talented. The defensive front will be led by DE Lawson Moock (6-0, 190), senior DT Dexter Shyne (5-9, 275), DE/DT JP Cormier 6-0 225, senior and team leader LB Jakob Handy (5-10, 205), senior second-year starting LB Bryson Hinike (5-9, 185) who is also a leader and senior DT/NG Chance Howard (5-10, 260) who is a strong kid. some of the younger players will compete as well to give depth.
Haughton Kicker/Punter Carter Ebarb
The key to the defense being successful is getting Amarion Lars back at some point in 2023. At 6-2 and 185 pounds, Lars is a three-year starting free safety/strong safety with 4.5 speed. He is recovering from an injury and should be back by late September. In the defensive backfield, it will be Lars, CB Dayshawn Glover 5-7 160 SR, SS/CB Andrew Markray (5-11, 170) and second-year starter Austin Walton (5-10, 170).
The special teams will be led by three-year starter senior kicker/punter Carter Ebarb (5-9, 165) who I think is one of the best in Louisiana as a kicker. I think Ebarb gets overlooked in the Shreveport area because two local kids, Parkway’s Aeron Burrell (LSU commit) and C.E. Byrd’s Abram Murray (Miami-Fla. commit) are two of the top kickers in the country. However, he’s a big-time weapon for this program and has made many big kicks and punts.
