2023 Louisiana Prep Football Preview: Istrouma High School (Baton Rouge)
Istrouma Magnet Indians
Head Coach: Sid Edwards (1st year)
2022 Record: 4-6
Class & District: Class 4A (District 6)
“We are starting anew and we have lots of work,” new Istrouma High School head coach Sid Edwards. “We have beautiful kids that are hungry and humble. It may take a minute but the Indians are coming!”
The Indians hired the right guy Coach Edwards to come in to try and continue to build the program from the good things former head coach Jeremy Gladney did in his short time. Coach Edwards was the head coach at Central for 11 years and also coached at Redemptorist High School for many years. He knows how to put together a good staff and get kids to come out for football, something he’s done at the highest level two different times in his career with a lot of success. The staff at Istrouma has a few of his ex-players he coached including Sean Brown (Central), DB Louis Covington (Central HS) and Jestin Kelly (Redemptorist) all played for Coach Sid in High School. He also hired veteran coaches such as Carl DiJohn, who coached at Central with Coach Sid and Vernon Langley. Ed Wilson who also will help coach played. Coach Edwards’ dad is an alum of Istrouma High School (Class of 1968).
Istrouma will play a lot of kids on both sides of the football. The program has some talented linemen with size to build around in Coach Edwards’ first year. Key lineman back is four-year starter OL/DT Tyrease Tate (6-4, 290, Sr.) who lost a lot of weight so he could be in great shape, OL James McGuffery (6-0, 255), center James Zanders (5-10, 320), OL/DL Robert Henderson, DL Troy Noble, OL/DT Benton Harris (6-0, 285) three-year starter, three-year starter DT Zion Gardner-Burrell (6-0, 315) and three-year starter OL Travyon Jefferson (6-1, 320). Skill-wise, the program will need a big year out of these kids: RB/OLB/SS Jeremiah Coleman 6-0 205, WR/S/OLB Dyion Chavers (6-0, 190), DB Kyree Paul (5-10, 175), QB Brady Lemoine (5-10, 165), WR/DB Jarvis Barnes (5-10, 170), WR/DB Troydell Jones (6-4, 165), three-year starter RB/DB Treyvon “Juice” Simon (5-8, 165), QB/WR/Athlete Michael Dempsey (5-10, 175), DB/RB Tyquon Henderson (5-11, 165) and several new players in program will look to make a name for themselves in 2023.
