Kentwood High School is one of the greatest programs in Southeast Louisiana as the Kangaroos have won nine state titles and are looking to win its 10th this season as the Kangaroos return most of their starters from last season.

“It’s no secret we have a lot of starters back in 2023,” Kentwood head coach Johnathan Foster said. “The last two years in a row we had only five seniors each year. We have 18 starters back in 2023 and expectations are high again this year.

Since Foster has been at the helm, Kentwood has won two state titles in 2015 and 2018. Coach Foster also took the team to the state title game in 2017 and the semifinals in 2014, 2016 and 2019. The Kangaroos have also won state titles in 1928, 1939, 1969, 1983, 1986, 1997, and 1998.

The offense will have tons of speed back and that’s not good for many defenses in the district. Most of the skill players will play on both sides of the ball. The top players coming back are All-District WR/SS/CB Shemar Cooper (5-8, 165, Sr.), All-State WR/CB Ke’vante Carter (5-8, 170, Sr.), who had over 20 Touchdowns in the last two years, All-District RB Shun J’Marion Burton (5-9 210), QB/WR Eric Earl (5-11, 165, 4.5 speed, Sr.), QB Germarcus Wilson (6-2, 190, Sr.), who was the starter at QB most of 2022 season and a great player with 4.5 speed, WR/DB Tadarius Carter (5-10, 175), WR Rayvon Moore (5-11, 175, Sr.), a new starter with 4.45 speed, WR/CB Jermaine Brown and SS/OLB Chris Gordon (6-0, 170, Sr.) who is a leader and high IQ player.

Key linemen and linebackers back for 2023 part of the team are All-State players OL/DL Edwin Wilson (6-3, 280, Sr.) and DE/OLB Lymichael Callahan (6-0, 205) who has 4.6 speed and is a great athlete. Other returning starters include OL/DE James McKnight (5-11, 220, Sr.), OL/DT Jay Smith (6-1, 265, Sr.), OLB Tylann Brumfield (5-9, 170), MLB/P Trevonte Miller, MLB Kevonte Miller, OLB/SS Noah Cooper (5-11, 170) and second-year DE JaQuabis Blunt (6-0, 195).
