Louisiana Tech's Relentlessness Wins Over C.E. Byrd High School Lineman Carson Bruno
by Jace LeJeune
C.E. Byrd High School defensive lineman Carson Bruno has always been relentless in his playing style whether it is on the offensive line or on the defensive line. At 6-4, 285 pounds, Bruno has always had the body type and the athleticism to play at the next level, but it is what he brings extra to the table that makes him stand out the most.
"My biggest strength is hustling to the ball on every play," Bruno said.
Although Bruno has admitted that he needs to improve on a couple of areas including his footwork and knowledge of the game, he does not lack in confidence with his abilities.
"I started believing I could play at the DI level in the third grade," Bruno said. "I’ve always believed I could go DI because how else you gonna get there if you don’t believe it from the beginning."
That confidence level and competitiveness comes from his father Lindsey Bruno, who coaches the offensive line at C.E. Byrd High School. Both Coach Bruno and Carson are especially competitive in team scrimmages when Carson has to go against his dad's unit in practice.
"It’s very fun because sometimes he doesn’t know whether to be mad or happy if I beat one of his lineman because he wants both of us to do good," Carson Bruno said. "He was the person to tell me to hustle on every play."
Following his dad's footsteps is Carson as his dad Lindsey was a former player at Nicholls State. His mother Amy also played basketball at Nicholls State as well, which makes even more sense considering that Carson is also a standout player on the hardwood. The second generation future athlete has received offers from schools such as Army, ULM, Arkansas State, Northwestern State, Southeastern, Nicholls State, and Southern, but for the two time All-District selection, one school has shown the relentlessness and same passion for his services as much as he shows those skills on the football field. That school is Louisiana Tech where Carson decided to commit to back in April.
"Coach Dennis Smith, Coach Robert MacFarland, Coach Joe Sloan, and Coach Trey Holtz all did a great job of recruiting me," Bruno said. "I love the brotherhood and family that they have there as well as the fact that they have texted and called me every week since they offered me."
What the Louisiana Tech coaching staff has pitched to Bruno has been shown in the Bulldogs' 2-0 early start to the season.
"They are relentless because they came back after that first game being down and beat Southern Miss," Bruno said. "Then, the second game, they laid the hammer on Houston Baptist beating them by almost 30 points."
Bruno is keeping an eye on his future team, but right now, he is focused on his current team in the Yellow Jackets for his senior season.
"We have high energy, a lot of returners on defense, and a ball control offense," Bruno said.
High energy and a positive attitude is what Bruno also brings on the table for his team. There will also be a guarantee that Carson Bruno will bring that same intensity and relentlessness to Ruston.
