Ascension Episcopal's Matthew Remondet Improves Stock After Monstrous Senior Season

Ascension Episcopal High School senior tight end/defensive end Matthew Remondet was one of the Blue Gators' best players from the 2021 season. Matthew made 1st Team All-District at not only tight end, but defensive end as well. In fact, he was named Co-Defensive MVP in his district with over 12 sacks, five punt blocks, two fumble recoveries, and 20 quarterback knockdowns. Statistically, it was a great season for the two way starter as it was for the team itself with an 8-1 regular season record and a district championship.

"We finished with a great regular season going undefeated in the regular season and district," Remondet said. "In the playoffs, we had a tough loss to Notre Dame in the second round. We overall had a good season, but fell short of our ultimate goal of winning state."

Although Remondet wanted to end his high school career with a state championship, what he did accomplish was improve his stock as a recruit. Louisiana Football Magazine's recruiting guru Lee Brecheen has been very impressed with what he has seen with Remondet this past season.

"Matthew Remondet's older brother Michael Remondet plays for Tulane currently," Brecheen said. "His older brother is about 6-3, 275 pounds, and Matthew is 6-4. In Matthew's junior season, he was 210 pounds, and now, he has put on over 20 pounds of muscle for his senior season. He went from being a D-II guy at the beginning of the year to now being a bonafide DI player. He is very athletic with 4.65/40 speed, and I am blown away that he does not have a bunch of DI offers. When you see him play, his athletic ability is off the charts and plays tough as well as all out as a defensive end. Matthew checks all of the boxes, but I don't know if many people have seen him play as a senior. In his junior year, he was tall and thin, but now, he looks like the real deal."

What is more impressive in the younger Remondet's emergence is that he has gained over 25 pounds of muscle during a global pandemic.

"From the end of the my junior year to the start of my senior year, I gained around 25 pounds of muscle," Remondet said. "During the lockdown, I was given the opportunity to train two to three times a day. Because of this, I started to get stronger and faster. I also had a meal plan that helped with gaining weight."

All the hard work in getting bigger also helped him in getting stronger and faster as well.

"One of my biggest strengths is being a relatively large player and being able to do all of the things skill guys can do," Remondet said. "Even with me being 230 pounds, I believe I can run, jump, and move as well as any other person on the field."

Right now, Matthew has received one scholarship offer from Valparaiso and has also received two preferred walk-on offers from Tulane and Furman. Getting noticed by s is what drives Matthew Remondet as his older brother was heavily involved with the recruiting process before signing with the Green Wave.

"I learned that I have to keep working on my craft," Remondet said. "I learned that the guys that can make an impact on the collegiate level are the players that make it a priority to keep getting better every single day."

Seeing his older brother go through the recruiting process helps Matthew when he is looking at programs to enroll in.

"I am looking for great academics, a great location, and most importantly, the place that feels like the best fit for me," Remondet said.

Although Matthew has not received as much offers as his older brother, COVID-19 has also played a role in the late recruiting process for Matthew as well as his improved senior season.

"COVID-19 had a major impact in my recruiting process," Remondet said. "I made tremendous improvements from my junior year, and I was not able to showcase my talents. I was not nearly the player I was when I was a junior and without having great junior film, I had a harder time getting recruited than other people in the area."

Because of that, it has pushed him to be the best possible player and student of the game he can be.

"My mentality and effort is what sets me apart," Remondet said. "I believe that every rep and play is important, and I believe you have to work harder than what is expected."

For Matthew Remondet, everything is earned, not given.

Jace is from Addis, LA but resides in Port Allen, LA. Jace attends Southeastern Louisiana University and is majoring in Communications. This is Jace’s fourth year as Associate Editor at Louisiana Football Magazine. He is also a graduate from Catholic High School in baton-rouge where he was the editor of the school newspaper the “Bearly Published.” While at CHS, Jace also announced their football, basketball, and baseball games for the Bruin Broadcast Network which is the Catholic High’s streaming website for their events. On weekends, Jace is the PA announcer for his middle school football games. At home, Jace enjoys time with his family and friends.
