Despite Success On Hardwood, Assumption's Jaden Tyler Totally Committed To Playing Football

by Jace LeJeune

At 6-2, 170 pounds, Jaden Tyler is faced with a very good problem that not a lot of athletes are accustomed to, which is having plenty of success in two sports. What comes with the success is opportunities along the way. As a basketball player, Tyler has shown his skillset by being named Co-District MVP for his outstanding play his sophomore season. As a junior, he averaged 19.8 points per game, 5.1 rebounds per game, four assists per game, and three steals per game. The Assumption High School Mustangs shooting guard has also scored over 1,000 points in his career. Despite his success on the hardwood, it is actually another sport that could provide the open door for Tyler, and that sport is football.

"My biggest achievement so far is receiving interests from s for football," Tyler said. "Nicholls State is my only offer, but I got interests from Tulane, UL, Louisiana Tech, and McNeese State."

The local in-state schools have showed plenty of attention to Tyler, who is one of the best natural athletes in the Houma area. On the gridiron, this two sport athlete is just as explosive on the basketball court with 4.5/40 speed, great hands, big frame, toughness, and of course, his leaping ability.

"I believe my jumping ability is what has helped me playing basketball that has also helped me with football," Tyler said.

For new Assumption High School head coach Keith Menard, he will make sure that number two will get the ball in his hands as much as he can on the offensive side of the football as a receiver after having a standout season with 852 receiving yards along with 13 touchdowns in 2019. It is a given that Tyler can make plenty of explosive plays with the ball in his hands, but it is when he does not have the ball in his hands that he wants to make the most impact for his team in 2020.

"For this season, I want to improve on my blocking," Tyler said.

Of course, Tyler said that he wants to score touchdowns and make plenty of plays for the Mustangs this season, but there is one thing that he wants more than all of those big plays combined.

"I want to make a big run in the playoffs this season," Tyler said.

Although Tyler has had success in both sports, there is only one sport good enough for him to play in .

"I want to play football at the next level, and I don't want to play basketball at the next level as well," Tyler said.

Shifting his focus to one sport has made the recruiting process easier for Tyler as he knows what he wants.

"I want a school that really wants me," Tyler said.

With the raw athletic skill set that makes a lot of coaches check off the boxes on Tyler, there are plenty of schools that would want this two sport star in their program.
