For Longtime Coach Brian Williams, There Is No Place Like Montgomery

For the last 17 seasons in a small town in Central Louisiana, Montgomery High School head coach Brian Williams has led the past and current members of his football team to become not just great football players, but even greater men. Winning on the football field is always a main goal, but Coach Williams believes that while the X’s and O’s will always be there, building a relationship is what’s most important”.

Coach Williams shared that “wins and losses are going to come and go at Montgomery High School”, but his favorite part of being a coach is “working with each individual kid and seeing their growth and development.” With a team made up of just 14 players, each of his football teams become a true band of brothers. Coach Williams believes that “getting older players to push the younger players” helps create an important bond between players while also instilling leadership qualities.

COVID-19 has made life harder for everyone, and it is easy to lose enthusiasm from time to time. However, in Williams’ 18th season as head coach, his motivation has never wavered. Right now, he is focused and is looking forward to the upcoming season noting, “We are going to be young, and we are looking forward to getting everything back to normal”.

In a small town like Montgomery where there is not even a stoplight, the town camaraderie is also something Coach Williams puts a lot of emphasis on. Williams shared that the “community supports us and travels well”, and has been an important part of fostering a positive team morale. Much like the whole of Louisiana rallies around the new-orleans Saints on Sunday, all of Montgomery shows their team support for Williams and the Tigers on Friday nights. Williams notes that “the attendance at the quarterfinals of their recent playoff run was something special”. Needless to say, Coach Williams is looking forward to getting the fans back in the stands and his team back on the field this fall.

Trent Schachter is from San Luis Obispo, California and currently a senior at Louisiana State University. He is majoring in Sports Administration and minoring in Business. In high school, he was a 4-time All-American and the only swimmer in his school’s history to qualify for the State Championship in every event. Trent was recruited by the Tigers to become a Division I student-athlete and spent the last four years competing against the best in the SEC. Growing up in California, he became a huge Oakland Raiders fan from birth.
