Landry Walker QB Justin Hudson Commits to the Tennessee State Tigers

For the first time since Landry Walker High School quarterback Keytaon Thompson (Mississippi State/Virginia) led the Chargin' Bucs to a Class 5A state championship back in 2016, there has been a little bit of a carousel at the quarterback position over the years. Now, the program feels like it has its most talented quarterback since Thompson on this year's roster in Justin Hudson.

"I feel my arm strength, my abilities to read defenses, and my accuracy is what sets me apart as a quarterback," Hudson said.

Originally, it was a little bit of adjusting for Hudson to come to a new high school at first after transferring from Salmen High School at the beginning of last season.

"It was like a whole different atmosphere," Hudson said. "The kids are hungrier to win so it feels great switching schools."

It feels especially great with what Hudson accomplished in only his first year with the school. In 2019, the 6-2, 210 pound dual threat quarterback threw for 2,380 passing yards and 27 touchdowns while also running for 1,048 yards and ten more touchdowns. Even though it was a great year statistically, Hudson has much higher goals and loftier numbers to achieve.

"I would give myself a B+," Hudson said. "I had some things to get better on including hesitation and footwork when other players are around me in the pocket. This season, I'm trying to hit 4,000 yards passing and 50 touchdowns while rushing for 20 touchdowns and 2,000 more yards."

Being able to beat defenders with his legs as well as his arm is what Hudson grew up wanting to do, especially after watching his idol play quarterback.

"I love Michael Vick (Virginia Tech/Atlanta Falcons/Philadelphia Eagles) because he was great at everything he did including confusing defenses by being able to throw and run," Hudson said.

While it was Vick's ability as a dual threat quarterback that got him to the NFL, it was Hudson's dual threat ability that helped notch him his first offer, which was Tennessee State. That one offer would soon turn out to be a commitment. Although Hudson will still consider other future offers that will come his way, Nashville will still be the place for him.

"I committed to Tennessee State because of the relationship they kept with me and the love I was getting each and every day from them," Hudson said. "I love the program and staff."

The recent Tennessee State commit is currently being recruited by the coaching staff as an athlete with the ability to play either quarterback or wide receiver because of his 4.5/40 speed. Considering that Landry Walker's last dual threat quarterback helped lead the team to a state championship, Hudson feels obligated to do the same thing.

"I think we were robbed out of the playoffs last season, but this year, this team is special and I think we are going undefeated and on a special run," Hudson said.

The players are confident in their abilities as the program has a coach that has recently played in the NFL in former new-orleans Saints cornerback Keenan Lewis, who can relate to the players.

"It's like the best feeling in the world because he's literally telling us what we have to do in order to be successful every step of the way," Hudson said.

Not only does Hudson want to be successful on the field, but he wants to be successful off the field because he realizes football does not last forever.

"I'll be a personal trainer helping out the youth and having an architectural business," Hudson said.

Justin Hudson's athletic abilities have always gotten him to this point, but a lot of times, it takes something more to be a great football player, and he has the mind frame to always study as well as figure out what is the best way to get out of difficult situations. To have that type of player that can think his way through different situations and can also do it with his physical skills makes him a name to keep an eye out for in the 2020 season.
