St. Amant's Star QB/K Cole Poirrier Is Chomping At The Bit To Score Plenty Of More Points For The Gators

Over the last couple of seasons, one of the most underrated players in the baton-rouge area is St. Amant High School senior QB/K Cole Poirrier. At 6-3, 195 pounds, Poirrier has become one of the most accomplished players in the program's history earning All-State and 2nd Team All-Parish honors as well as being named All-District twice. Despite all the honors and accolades, the star Gators quarterback is searching for his first offer.

"The recruiting process has been pretty good so far," Poirrier said. "I have not received any offers yet. I have had a good bit of schools in contact with me throughout the process."

Right now, Poirrier has visited Nicholls State and plans on having more visits coming up. Although he does not know where he will attend and play football at, he does know what he is looking for.

"I want to go to a that wants me a part of their program with a great atmosphere around it," Poirrier said. "I think those are the biggest things that I look for."

Those aspects are all things that Poirrier is used to at St. Amant where he has played for the last three years. Originally having started as a kicker his sophomore year, where he still plays even today, Poirrier's versatility did not come unnoticed by the coaching staff and because of that, he split starting snaps with a senior signal caller. Sharing snaps at the quarterback position has helped shape Poirrier into the type of player he is today.

"I was a part of a two quarterback system in my sophomore year," Poirrier said. "It helped me learn a lot about myself. It taught me that I had to bring my best to practice and in the games everyday because nothing was guaranteed. I have took that lesson with me and use it everyday to evolve to where I am now."

Now, Poirrier is one of the best senior players in South Louisiana as he was selected to be on the front cover of Louisiana Football Magazine before the start of the season. Louisiana Football Magazine Owner Lee Brecheen is super impressed with his arm, speed, and athleticism. For Poirrier, he believes his ability to extend plays is his biggest strength.

"I think my ability to get through my progressions and understand the defense as well as being able to use my legs and scramble are my biggest strengths as a quarterback," Poirrier said.

Poirrier has lived up to the preseason hype leading the Gators to an impressive 5-2 start to the season, but for him, there is always room for improvement.

"I would say a B+ because there is always room for improvement with decision making, but I feel my play this year has been pretty solid," Poirrier said. "I need to sometimes make smarter decisions and learn to try and not force things that aren't there, and a throw away could be a good thing a lot of times."

Making plays has always been in Poirrier's forte whether it is kicking field goals or throwing touchdowns. Case in point, this season included Poirrier's best game of his career, which was against Woodlawn High School when he threw for five touchdowns. The Gators will need both Poirrier's throwing arm and kicking leg for the rest of the season in order to make a playoff run.

"My biggest goal for the rest of the season is to win these last two games and get a nice seed for the playoffs," Poirrier said.

The St. Amant playmaker is a scoring machine and his abiliy to put points on the board will help him beyond high school.

"I think that the biggest thing to tell coaches is that I am someone who can take over and win a ball game for the team," Poirrier said.

Taking over games in multiple ways is something that Cole Poirrier is definitely used to.

Jace is from Addis, LA but resides in Port Allen, LA. Jace has graduated recently from Southeastern Louisiana University with a major in Communications. Jace has also broadcasted games as a play by play announcer for Southeastern’s football and basketball games on ESPN Plus. Also, Jace has anchored and reported on Southeastern’s award winning show “The Big Game.” Finally, Jace has been hired to be the Voice of The Episcopal Knights for Varsity Sports Network. This is Jace’s fifth year as Associate Editor at Louisiana Football Magazine. He is also a graduate from Catholic High School in baton-rouge where he was the editor of the school newspaper the “Bearly Published.” While at CHS, Jace also announced their football, basketball, and baseball games for the Bruin Broadcast Network which is the Catholic High’s streaming website for their events. On weekends, Jace is the PA announcer for his middle school football games. At home, Jace enjoys time with his family and friends. Besides being a huge football fan, Jace is also an avid NHRA drag racing fan.
