St. James National Recruit Saivion Jones Lets His Play Do The Talking

At 6-5, 230 pounds, St. James defensive end Saivion Jones is one of the most nationally sought after players not only in the state, but in the entire country. According to 247 Sports, he is the number nine player in the state and has drawn comparisons to former LSU defensive ends Barkevious Mingo and Arden Key (Oakland Raiders) because of his frame and athleticism. Our own Lee Brecheen also believes that Jones could eventually have a career in the NFL because of his upside. Not only are recruiting experts praising Jones' ability, but 20 s have also done so as well offering the four star prospect. Usually, receiving all kinds of offers can fill a kid's head up, but not Jones. The only thing that the star St. James defender is worried about is getting to the quarterback.

"The accomplishment that I am most proud of is that I have earned over 30 sacks," Jones said. "This year, my goal is to get at least 15 sacks."

Getting to the quarterback and disrupting opposing offenses was not a problem for the All-State selection as he helped lead the St. James Wildcats to an undefeated season and the Class 3A state championship by posting 103 total tackles, 17 tackles for loss, 13 sacks, two forced fumbles, three fumble recoveries, and a defensive touchdown along the way.

"It was an amazing experience to win the state championship last year," Jones said. "However, just like last year, we are going back again."

Getting back to the state championship has been the ultimate goal for one of the best competitors in the state.

"The reason I love football so much is because it is very competitive," Jones said. "I love playing games."

For Jones, it is in his competitive nature to play sports as his uncle and cousins were also great athletes in their own right. In order to fulfill his competitive needs, Jones has also played other-sports and as a result, has helped his elite speed as a pass rusher on the football field.

"I also play basketball and run track because it keeps me in shape for football," Jones said.

Despite the coronavirus pandemic breaking out and not being able to participate in other-sports as well as spring football practice, it still has been convenient for Jones to stay physically fit for the upcoming season whenever it does come into fruition.

"I have a levee outside my house so I have been working out there," Jones said.

As far as his other teammates are concerned during this time, he is there for them if they need anything.

"We are all in this together," Jones said.

As Jones is getting ready to be a senior leader for the defending state champions, he got to experience something that not a lot of other high school football players get to experience and that is visit some of the finest facilities in football.

"Being able to see other places has been my favorite part about the recruiting process because they really show me what football is like and I get to see other places," Jones said. "I also get to talk to football coaches like Coach O, which is pretty cool."

In speaking of Coach Ed Orgeron, the LSU Tigers are one of the teams that Jones has narrowed down his recruitment process to along with Mississippi State, Florida, Texas A&M, Baylor, and Florida State. Whenever it comes to making a decision for the next four seasons, well, mother knows best.

"My mom will help me make that decision when the time comes," Jones said.

While football fans of these particular schools wait to see if their team can land the St. James senior defensive end, all Jones can do is what he does best, which is to give quarterbacks nightmares and let his playing do the talking.

Jace is from Addis, LA but resides in Port Allen, LA. Jace attends Southeastern Louisiana University and is majoring in Communications.
