The Archbishop Rummel football program in Metairie, LA has posted a 7-0 undefeated record so far in the season. Not only is the team undefeated, but they have not let any opponent score a touchdown until their most recent game against Holy Cross in a 17-7 victory. This is Coach Nick Monica's first year as head coach, but he isn’t unfamiliar with the team. Senior defensive back and Vanderbilt commit Donovan Kaufman says that it wasn’t hard to adjust to the transition of a new head coach since he was already part of the staff as his position coach. Coach Monica and the rest of the coaching staff have taught their players skills that will continue with them beyond football.
Senior Quinton Cage says, “Well, every day, I wake up I have learn from this great program is never get complacent and nothing will ever be given to you everything is worked for."
According to Kaufman, other life skills that he learned from this program is a better work ethic and time management. Senior linebacker Jordon Williams adds that the bond and ability to trust each other has led to the team’s success.
Along with skills, there are techniques that players are being taught by the coaching staff that has led to their victory.
“We work hard every day," Cage said. "Coach Monica never lets us slack from the scout team to the starters. Every day, we go out to practice and it’s just one mind set, which is kill or be killed and all of us are just hungry. We have excellent game plans. We just have to execute them when the time comes.”
Senior defensive back Corey Smooth also mentioned that the players focus on themselves instead of worrying about the opponent, which helps them to be able to get their matches and checks down.
When asked what struggles the team had to overcome in order to get to 7-0, Smooth responded, “Our main focus was being able to finish and we worked on that for the last 2 years and it came together so we was able to polish off everything else and build some great chemistry between each other. "
To continue through the pressure of being undefeated, Williams says the team does not let the hype get to their heads and stay within what led them to this point.
The Raiders will try and continue their undefeated season this Saturday against the St. Augustine Purple Knights.
