The Avoyelles Mustangs Want To Take The Next Step In 2021

After winning their first playoff game in program history for the 2019 season, the Avoyelles Mustangs were looking to take the next step in 2020 as the team was returning over 20 juniors that played a lot from the previous season. Despite a good season on paper winning five games and also winning a playoff game, Avoyelles head coach Andy Boone felt like that the team's season could have been better in 2020.

"We were up by nine points against Kinder High School in the playoffs with eight minutes left in the game," Coach Boone said. "Near the end of the game, we dropped an interception, and if we caught it, we would have won the game. We tip it up and they catch it at the one yard line. We should have won and we probably should have beaten Many High School in the regular season. It was 7-6 at halftime in that game. It was a disappointing season in our minds and we felt like we underachieved."

Coach Boone also admitted that his team did play really hard and gave it all they got, but the craziness, which 2020 was, certainly played a hand on how the season played out.

"Last season, COVID just killed us," Coach Boone said. "It was an issue getting the kids to practice, getting them to school, and it was just a big issue for us. Then, we missed two games, and we actually went to play a game, but never practiced. We were out for two weeks and then, went to play a game on a Monday. We went to play South Beauregard, but I hadn't seen the kids for two weeks. All of this stuff was new to everybody, and the whole season was just weird."

Hopefully, for Coach Boone and his coaching staff, the 2021 season will be much more normal in comparison. Coach Boone is also excited that majority of everybody returns plus new contributors.

"We got a lot coming back," Coach Boone said. "We got some new guys from the basketball team that are going to help us. We got an All-State running back coming back in Carlos Bazert Jr. as well as several other running backs coming back plus All-District linebackers in Travon Prater and Corian Heath. The sky is the limit if I can get them coached up and get them here."

With a fresh outlook, plenty of talent, and a good coaching staff, the Avoyelles Mustangs are looking to be at full power in 2021.

Jace is from Addis, LA but resides in Port Allen, LA. Jace has graduated recently from Southeastern Louisiana University with a major in Communications. Jace has also broadcasted games as a play by play announcer for Southeastern’s football and basketball games on ESPN Plus. Also, Jace has anchored and reported on Southeastern’s award winning show “The Big Game.” This is Jace’s fifth year as Associate Editor at Louisiana Football Magazine. He is also a graduate from Catholic High School in baton-rouge where he was the editor of the school newspaper the “Bearly Published.” While at CHS, Jace also announced their football, basketball, and baseball games for the Bruin Broadcast Network which is the Catholic High’s streaming website for their events. On weekends, Jace is the PA announcer for his middle school football games. At home, Jace enjoys time with his family and friends. Besides being a huge football fan, Jace is also an avid NHRA drag racing fan.
